A CONTEMPORARY PROTOTYPE FOR BOOKMAKING: IN THE AGE OF... LED BY REM KOOLHAAS, IRMA BOOM, AND PHILLIP DENNY. THE METAL BOOK IS MADE IN RESPONSE TO STUDIES OF HISTORIC CHINESE AND JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINTING. INSPIRED BY THE METHOD OF ENGRAVING SOLID MATTER, EMBOSSING IS USED TO WRITE AND SCAR INTO THE METAL SHEETS—FOUND CAMPER STOVE TINS—WITH THE ‘HAND’ OF THE ZUND MACHINE IN THE AGE OF DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY.

BOOK MAKING WAS A TEAM-TAUGHT,PROJECT-BASED SEMINAR CHARTING NEW TRAJECTORIES FOR THE FUTURE OF THE BOOK, TAKING THE PROCESS OF CONSTRUCTING A BOOK AS A SITE FOR CRITICAL INTERVENTION AND DESIGN EXPERIMENTATION.

Instructors & Collaborators: OMA EU: Rem Koolhaas, Irma Boom, Phillip Denny, Rita Varjabedian.
